THE PROTOTYPE

The Sun Block ADU proposes a flexible construction system for optimized passive solar design. Durable, easy to install, and ubiquitous, there is no building material more associated with Phoenix than concrete block.  The system consists of insulated block mass walls, a standardized bathroom/kitchen utility module, and glazed end partitions. A variety of spatial layouts adapt to user needs and lot orientations. Selecting concrete block as the primary building material ensures that the ADU is constructed economically by local masons using materials sourced in Arizona.

FITTING INTO THE NEIGHBORHOOD

The Sun Block ADU provides opportunities for greater multi-generational living within existing neighborhoods. Conceived to fit within the narrower lots found in downtown and midtown, the unit can accommodate a growing family, aging in place, or supplemental rental income for residents at risk of displacement through rising housing costs. The concrete mass walls blend into the existing fabric of the historic neighborhood and provide acoustic protection from alleyways.

SOLAR AND ENERGY PERFORMANCE

The arrangement of east and west facing mass walls shielding the interior from direct solar radiation coupled with daylighting on the north and south is a time-tested strategy for environmental performance in the valley. Coupled with an overhead awning, this window arrangement can improve daylighting by 20%. With greater heat capacity, the concrete block walls absorb 45% more radiation on hot days. Taking advantage of diurnal swing, cross ventilation, and self-shading, the Sun Block ADU can extend the season for passive cooling and daylighting.
